Can You Track a Stolen Android Phone? Here's What Actually Works

The honest answer is: often yes, sometimes no, and rarely in the way people imagine.
Phone tracking is not a live dot moving smoothly across a map for as long as you care to watch. It is a series of position reports, each of which requires the device to be powered, located and connected. Understanding where that chain breaks tells you exactly what to expect.
What the phone uses to know where it is
GPS is the most accurate — typically within a few metres outdoors. It needs sky visibility, so it degrades badly indoors, in basements, and in dense city streets where signals bounce off buildings.
Wi-Fi positioning is the quiet workhorse. Phones identify nearby Wi-Fi networks and compare them against a database of known network locations. This works indoors, is often accurate to a building, and — importantly — does not require connecting to those networks or having a SIM.
Mobile network positioning uses which cell towers the phone can see. It is the least precise, ranging from a few hundred metres in a city to several kilometres in rural areas, but it works wherever there is coverage.
In practice a phone blends all three. This is why a location can be accurate to a doorway one minute and a whole neighbourhood the next.
Getting that location to you
Knowing where it is does not help unless the phone can tell you. Android's device-finding service (Find Hub, previously Find My Device) handles this: locate the device, play a sound at full volume even if silenced, lock it remotely with a message, or erase it.
Two features are worth understanding because they change the odds:
Last known location. If the device goes offline, the service still shows where it was when it last reported, with a timestamp. A stale location is not useless — it tells you where the phone stopped being connected, which is frequently where it went.
Offline finding. Newer Android devices can be located through a crowdsourced network: other nearby Android phones detect the device's Bluetooth signal and relay an encrypted location report. This can work when the phone has no data connection of its own, which is exactly the scenario people assume is hopeless. Coverage depends on other devices being nearby, so it is far better in a city than on an empty road.
Where tracking stops
Be realistic about the failure modes:
- Powered off. A phone that is off does not report. Some devices support limited location reporting for a period after shutdown, but you should not plan around it.
- No connectivity at all. No data, no Wi-Fi, and out of range of any relaying device means no report.
- Factory reset. A wiped device stops reporting to your account. Factory Reset Protection makes a reset device much harder to actually use, which is a real deterrent, but it does not keep it findable for you.
- Airplane mode, which is the first thing many thieves do — and which is why the minutes immediately after a theft are the ones that count.
Notice the pattern: every limitation is about the device's ability to communicate. Tracking is a race against someone switching something off.
Tracking the device vs identifying the person
Here is the distinction that most articles on this topic miss entirely.
Everything above answers where is my phone. None of it answers who has my phone. Those are different questions with different answers, and for most people the second one is what actually leads anywhere.
A location gives the police an address. An address is useful, but it is also often a street, a block of flats, or a market — somewhere a phone passed through rather than somewhere a person lives. A photograph of the individual holding it, with a timestamp and coordinates attached, is a different quality of evidence.
That capture is possible because of a predictable behaviour: whoever takes a phone will try to unlock it, usually within minutes, while looking directly into the front camera. Use both. Device finding tells you where the hardware went; intruder capture tells you who was holding it. Neither replaces the other.
What to do with a location once you have it
Not this: go there.
A location on a map is information for a police report, not an invitation. Screenshot it with its timestamp, note the accuracy radius, and hand it over along with your IMEI and any captured evidence. Then work through the rest of the recovery checklist — securing your accounts matters more than recovering the hardware, and it is the part entirely within your control.
